Ballantyne is an upscale neighborhood in the City of Charlotte, occupying a 2,000 acre area of land in South Charlotte, adjacent to the South Carolina border.
The 535-acre Ballantyne Corporate Park has over 4,000,000 sq. feet of Class A office space and is home to the headquarters of Babcock & Wilcox, Tree.com Inc, Snyder’s-Lance Inc, Premier Inc, Fortune 500 company SPX, and ESPN Regional Television. In April 2013, MetLife announced that it was establishing its U.S. Retail Business Headquarters in Ballantyne. In June 2013, Wingate University announced that it is moving its Matthews, NC campus to Ballantyne.
Ballantyne offers shopping and dining conveniences at Ballantyne Village, Ballantyne Commons East, Ballantyne Quad and Ballantyne Corners. Stonecrest and Blakeney shopping centers and a variety of restaurants are just a few miles apart. Head 10 miles north, and you’ll find SouthPark Mall, which is home to more than 100 shops, dining options and specialty boutiques.
In April 14, 2012, Ballantyne residents came together to discuss an idea of breaking away from the City of Charlotte to form their own city. This has never been done before in North Carolina state history. If it is done, the residents would like to name the new city Providence. However, there is currently a North Carolina community that already carries this name and has its own zip code.
Ballantyne offers plenty of family-friendly activities and opportunities for recreation, including parks, playgrounds, walking trails, golf courses and country clubs.
